Before you hit record, make sure you have the Velo Chrome Extension installed. The extension is what enables Velo to capture your screen - without it, this method won’t work.
Don’t have the extension yet? Follow the Chrome Extension Installation guide first, then come back here.

Starting a recording

From the Velo dashboard, click Generate a Velo. You’ll see the four creation methods. Click Capture Screen Recording (marked as Recommended). A modal will appear titled Screen Recording.

The recording modal

The modal has two things to check before you continue: Project name - Velo pre-fills a random name (like “Dandy Shoal”). You can leave it or type a new one. This is just for your own reference inside the dashboard. Extension status - You’ll see an Extension Connected badge if Velo can detect the extension. If you see a warning instead, see Troubleshooting. Once you’re happy with the name and the extension is connected, click Continue.

The Chrome screen picker

After clicking Continue, Chrome will open its native screen-sharing dialog. This is a system-level window - it appears outside the browser tab. You’ll see three tabs to choose from:
  • Chrome Tab - Share a specific browser tab. Best when you’re demoing a web app and want to keep the recording focused.
  • Window - Share an entire browser or desktop application window.
  • Entire Screen - Share everything on your display. Useful if your walkthrough moves between multiple apps.
There’s also an Also share tab audio toggle if you want to capture audio playing in the tab (for example, in-app sounds or video). Select what you want to share, then click Share to begin recording.
For most video messages, Chrome Tab gives the cleanest result - no taskbars, notifications, or other windows in frame.

Starting from the extension

You don’t need to have the Velo web app open to start a recording. You can click the Velo extension icon in your Chrome toolbar at any time to start capturing directly. The recording will be linked to your account and appear in your dashboard when you’re done.
